Video games—are they as harmful and addictive as some might claim, or can they have significant benefits for those who play them? These questions and others will be addressed by Dr. Patrick O’Connor in his interactive presentation “The Psychology of Video Games” on Wednesday, Nov. 4 from 2:30 – 4:00 PM in SSC 3245. Refreshments will also be served.

This event is co-sponsored by the Game Development Club, the Mental Health Awareness Team, Psi Beta, and the Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Gaming Club. For more information, please contact James Allen at allenj@cod.edu.

Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Gaming Club Meeting Minutes

October 6, 2015

I.) Welcome new faces!

Ashely- Orientation

II.) Past Events:

A.) Movies

1.)    Hotel Transylvania II- ridiculously adorable

2.)    The Martian- It was REALLY good. Matt Damien is really funny.

3.)    Man from UNCLE- Good, not great; many sexual jokes, dry humor.

B.) Television

1.)    Dr. Who- Sonic Sunglasses -_- Besides that, very good. Love Missy!

2.)    Gotham- Young Joker is really great, needs to grow up and play the Joker!

3.)    Agents of SHIELD – Varied opinions. Don’t like the Inhumans aspect.

4.)    Once Upon a Time- Better than last season. One moment just way too Disney, even for this show.

5.)    Limitless- based on Limitless. Guy takes a pill to increase mental capacity. Not so good at this point

6.)    Blindspot- So far disappointing

C.) Open House- Lot of people interested but most were still in high schools. We stole a table so we had 2!

D.) Game Day- Fun was had by all!

E.) Laps for the Chaps- We were featured on the Courier TV. People had fun and we definitely came in last! Good job, team!

F.) Conception 2015: 110-125 attendees. Pathfinder was fairly unorganized. New virtual reality game called Artimis. People enjoyed it but never let TJ run the helm. The guy running this wants to bring it to CODCon

G.) Game Day at Itasca Library- Lots of fun. Very vicious game of Munchkin.

1.)    40th Anniversary of Monty Python & the Holy Grail: Wed., Oct. 14, 7:30 PM, Seven Bridges- Not sponsoring, people can go see it together if they want.

2.)    The Witch Hunter- Once again, not sponsoring, but people can still see it together.

4.)    Legends of Tomorrow- Coming out 2016

5.)    Lucifer- Lucifer stops wanting to rule hell and teams up with a cop?

B.) MagicQuest at Adventure Realm: Sat., Oct. 24, 12 – 3 PM? LARP combined with Laser Quest. This is a tentative date. Looking for a minimum of 10 people wanting and able to play.

C.) Next weekend is Homecoming! Bubble Soccer is on October 17^th. Sign up on ChapLife!

A.) CosPlay Report- No one here! Didn’t do as well at the bake sale as hoping. “Not failing miserably”

B.) Advisor’s Report

1.)    Next Monday, Walking Dead Psychology book signing. Flyer does not say how much the book is, but it is around $9 on Amazon and Barnes and Noble.

2.)    Tuesday the 13^th is Day of Action and Fall Pumpkin Party. They’re looking to collect old video games and consoles in good condition. Goes from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

3.)    COD Cares game day. We have settled on November 21^st from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

4.)    The next sponsored con is Stuffed COWS/WolfCon. Two cons (possibly 3), one gaming weekend!

C.) Inter-Club Activities

1.)    Psychology of Games. Met up with the other groups, it was interesting. We will be helping with promotion and completely taking care of catering. Other clubs in charge of promotion, popcorn Wednesday, and renting a popcorn machine for the day. The cost of renting the room will be divided between clubs. Another meeting will happen the week before the event.

2.)    Philosophy Club invited us to come to their Oct. 20 event—discussing The Matrix.

D.) CODCON

1.)    Still very early, but time to start advertising!

2.)    Consider whether you’d like to run an event.

E.) Random Rants and Gossip

1.)    Wednesday the 28^th from 11-1 p.m. there’s a Halloween party by Alter Ego with a costume contest and a Cosplay costume party 2:30-4:30 p.m. in BIC 2818.

2.)    Open Mic every Wednesday 12-2 p.m.

The Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Gaming club is sponsoring “Conception 2015“, a three-day gaming con run by the Concentric Convention Company.  The con will feature a massive board game library, RPGs, HeroClix events, tabletop games, vendors, and more.  For COD students, the cost is only $5 a day (with ID).  For more details, go to http://concentricgamecons.com/?page_id=42.

Since we have a fifth Tuesday this month, we’ll use it for nothing but gaming! Come on Tuesday, Sept. 29 from 2:30 – 6:00 PM to BIC 1630!  Bring your favorite board/card game (or come to try someone else’s!), as well as any munchies you prefer.

C.) Laps for the Chaps (9/26): Still accepting folks to be part of the team! We get to be last!

D.) Conception Gaming Convention (10/02 – 04): REALLY need folks to help out with set-up and tear down. Those who help not only get into the con for free, they get an additional paid movie for the semester!

E.) TV Series Returns/Premieres: Gotham, The Flash, Dr. Who, Supergirl, Jessica Jones, etc.
